Abstract (AI)
Knoevenagel condensation of various aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes with active methylene compounds such as methyl and ethyl cyanoacetate, malononitrile, and cyanoacetamide proceeds smoothly with stirring in water in the presence of 4 mol% of diammonium hydrogen phosphate. The reactions were carried out at room temperature in short periods with a very simple workup procedure and good to high yields.
Key Findings
1
Diammonium hydrogen phosphate efficiently catalyzes Knoevenagel condensation in water using only 4 mol% catalyst.
2
Reactions proceed at room temperature within short periods and provide good to high yields.
3
The aqueous procedure uses a very simple workup, supporting a more efficient and environmentally friendly synthesis.
4
The method accommodates various aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes with methyl or ethyl cyanoacetate, malononitrile, and cyanoacetamide.
