There have been numerous examples lately in the literature showing the successful application of full waveform inversion (FWI) providing a detailed subsurface model. Recently a derivative product of FWI; FWI image or FWI-derived reflectivity (FDR) has shown significant uplift over conventional images. The Atlantis field in the Gulf of America has seen these substantial improvements in seismic image fidelity because of the application of FWI. However, there remain areas at Atlantis—especially beneath the highly complicated salt overburden—where the image quality is still deficient for future field development. To help address this limitation, we designed a targeted long-offset OBN acquisition specifically aimed at increasing diving-wave illumination in a key subsalt region of interest. We went to the field and acquired this unique ‘lobster’ node layout and preliminary elastic FWI results have validated this design.
1
A targeted long-offset ocean bottom node (OBN) acquisition was designed to increase diving-wave illumination in a specific subsalt region of interest.
2
A unique 'lobster' node layout was acquired in the field to implement that targeted OBN survey.
3
Certain subsalt areas beneath complex salt overburden at Atlantis still exhibit deficient image quality despite prior FWI improvements.
4
FWI-derived reflectivity (FDR) significantly improves seismic image fidelity over conventional images at Atlantis field.
5
Preliminary elastic FWI results validate the effectiveness of the 'lobster' node survey design for improving subsalt imaging.

Targeted long-offset ocean-bottom-node (OBN) survey with a unique 'lobster' node layout at the Atlantis field subsalt region

Effectiveness of the 'lobster' long-offset OBN acquisition design in increasing diving-wave illumination and improving subsalt seismic image quality via elastic full waveform inversion (FWI) / FWI-derived reflectivity
