Abstract (AI)
One of the areas in which the framework of critical state soil mechanics finds an important application is in the interpretation and assessment of the results of the standard index property tests. It is shown that there exist simple approximate relationships between plasticity and compressibility, between liquidity and strength, and between liquidity and overburden pressure and overconsolidation ratio. The existence of these relationships permits the internal consistency of site investigation information to be rapidly assessed.
Key Findings
1
Critical state soil mechanics provides a framework for interpreting and assessing standard soil index property test results.
2
Liquidity is approximately related to soil strength, overburden pressure, and overconsolidation ratio.
3
Simple approximate relationships exist between soil plasticity and compressibility.
4
These relationships enable rapid assessment of the internal consistency of site investigation information.
