Identification and evaluation of Capstone project (final year project) plays a crucial role in the quality system of any technical institution which practices Outcome Based Education (OBE). The capstone projectsenable the students to challenge the conventional concepts and use the engineering knowledge to develop prototypes or to develop working modules for industries. In any case, the student is expected to identify the problem, formulate the objectives, perform an exhaustive literature survey, develop a benchmark model/simulate the existing work, develop the proposed modules/simulate the proposed work, evaluate the performance of the proposed work, document the work, present the work before a panel and explore the feasibility of converting the work as a technical paper or patent. The most challenging aspect is to formulate an assessment methodology for evaluating the extent to which the project has groomed the student in terms of Program Outcomes (POs). This paper discusses the assessment methodology and rubrics followed by Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology to assess the student’s performance in capstone projects.
1
Capstone projects are presented as a crucial component of quality assurance in technical institutions implementing Outcome Based Education.
2
Capstone projects may produce prototypes, industrial working modules, technical papers, or patents, extending engineering learning toward practical innovation.
3
The central challenge is assessing how effectively capstone projects develop students’ Program Outcomes (POs).
4
The paper describes assessment methodologies and rubrics used by Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology to evaluate capstone-project performance.
5
The projects require students to identify problems, formulate objectives, review literature, develop benchmark and proposed solutions, evaluate performance, document results, and present outcomes.
