Abstract (AI)
Instagram is currently the social media platform most associated with online images (and their analysis), but images from other platforms also can be collected and grouped, arrayed by similarity, stacked, matched, stained, labelled, depicted as network, placed side by side and otherwise analytically displayed. In the following, the initial focus is on Instagram, together with certain schools of thought such as Instagramism and Instagrammatics for its aesthetic and visual cultural study. Building on those two approaches, it subsequently focuses on other web and social media platforms, such as Google Image Search, Twitter, Facebook and 4chan. It provides demonstrations of how querying techniques create online image collections, and how these sets are analytically grouped through arrangements collectively referred to as metapictures.
Key Findings
1
Approaches from 'Instagramism' and 'Instagrammatics' are applied and extended to the study of images across other web and social media platforms.
2
Images from multiple platforms (Instagram, Google Image Search, Twitter, Facebook, 4chan) can be collected and grouped for comparative analysis.
3
Instagram is the primary social media platform associated with online images and their analysis.
4
Querying techniques enable creation of online image collections that can be analytically grouped and arranged.
5
The paper introduces and demonstrates 'metapictures'—collective arrangements (stacked, matched, stained, labelled, networked, side-by-side) for visual analysis.
Research Object
Online image collections from Instagram and other web/social media platforms (Google Image Search, Twitter, Facebook, 4chan)
Research Subject
Analytical methods and visual arrangements (querying, grouping, similarity-based arrays, stacking, matching, staining, labeling, network depiction) used to create and display metapictures and study aesthetic/visual cultural aspects (Instagramism/Instagrammatics)
