Abstract (AI)
С. И. S.I. Smirnov, a researcher of the history of clergy, is known for the concept of the “penitential family” developed in his “The Spiritual Father in Old Russia”, in which he saw the ideal of the church community. Smirnov described it as a historical feature of Old Russian church life, but the term was in demand among his contemporaries and became widely used without reference to the researcher's works. Thus, the “penitential family” as a concept taken out of the historical context was understood as a church community independent of the highest hierarchical authority. The article argues that Smirnov's work, while being historical, is no less inspired by his contemporary church-society discourse.
