Abstract (AI)
Surfactant enhanced oil recovery (EOR) includes surfactant flooding and surfactant stimulation. The main functions of surfactants are to reduce interfacial tension and wettability alteration. This paper is to review the EOR technology related to surfactant injection. The reviewed topics include the following: • Surfactant EOR mechanisms • Factors affecting interfacial tension • Trapping number • Screening criteria • Laboratory work • Numerical simulation work • Summary of pilot and large-scale applications • Surfactants used • Salinity gradient • Surfactant EOR in carbonate reservoirs • Surfactant EOR in shale reservoirs
Key Findings
1
Specialized considerations are reviewed for salinity gradients and surfactant EOR in carbonate and shale reservoirs.
2
Surfactant EOR comprises surfactant flooding and surfactant stimulation as two principal application modes.
3
Surfactants enhance oil recovery primarily by reducing oil–water interfacial tension and altering reservoir wettability.
4
The paper summarizes field-scale evidence, including pilot and large-scale applications, and surveys surfactant types used in EOR.
5
The review examines surfactant EOR mechanisms, interfacial-tension controls, trapping number, screening criteria, and laboratory and numerical studies.
