Abstract (AI)
The automotive industry will have smarter and more advanced technologies than before. Electronic Control Units (ECUs) in vehicles will be more complex due to more interfaces, connections, displays, user demand features, and suppliers. This means there is a great need to supply system updates to improve functionality and fix software bugs.Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates will be highly important for future connected vehicles. The OTA update will enable upgrading the vehicle functionalities or bug fixations in the embedded software installed on its remotely. This paper presents the OTA system architecture that allows vehicles to receive new software versions of their ECUs from the cloud server through GSM and Wi-Fi directly. This architecture depends on the telematics control unit inserted in the vehicle network. It is implemented to prove the concept, tested, and evaluated through this paper.
Key Findings
1
A telematics control unit serves as the integration point within the vehicle network for receiving OTA updates.
2
OTA updates are positioned to improve vehicle functionality and fix embedded-software bugs without requiring physical servicing.
3
The architecture delivers new ECU software versions directly through GSM and Wi-Fi connectivity.
4
The paper presents an OTA system architecture for remotely updating automotive ECU software from a cloud server.
5
The proposed architecture was implemented as a proof of concept and tested and evaluated.
