SUMMARY A 1-year-old dog with a history of constipation and vomiting of 5 days' duration was examined. Both inguinal regions, especially the left, were moderately swollen and doughy in consistency, but did not seem to be abnormally warm. A scrotal hernia had been reduced manually 3 months previously. Surgical exposure revealed a Richter's hernia of the ileum, associated with an indirect inguinal hernia on the left side. The Richter's hernia was inverted into the bowel lumen and the bilateral inguinal hernia was surgically reduced. Recovery was uncomplicated.
1
A 1-year-old dog presented with 5 days of constipation and vomiting and bilateral inguinal swelling, more pronounced on the left.
2
Both inguinal hernias were surgically reduced and the dog recovered without complications.
3
Surgical exploration revealed a Richter's hernia of the ileum associated with a left-sided indirect inguinal hernia.
4
The Richter's hernia was inverted into the bowel lumen and was identified during surgery rather than by external warmth or marked local heat.
5
The case history included a scrotal hernia that had been manually reduced three months earlier, indicating prior inguinal region herniation.
