Numerical analyses of dry sand beds subjected to earthquake shaking, on a geotechnical centrifuge and on a shaking table have been performed using finite elements. Elastic soil parameters have been deduced from experimental frequency responses. Conclusions are drawn concerning the level of complexity of soil model that is required to reproduce the observed features of response of the physical models.
1
Elastic soil parameters were inferred from the experimental frequency responses and used in the numerical analyses.
2
Finite-element simulations modeled dry sand beds subjected to earthquake shaking in both geotechnical centrifuge and shaking-table experiments.
3
Results provide conclusions about the adequacy of simple soil models for simulating dynamic responses of dry sand beds.
4
The study evaluates how much soil-model complexity is necessary to reproduce observed physical-model response features.
