Abstract (AI)
Delayed coking is a high-temperature thermal process (above 460 °C) designed for the deep processing of heavy oil residues to produce additional volumes of light hydrocarbons and marketable petroleum coke. The reactor block consists of several (2, 3, 4, or even 6) coking chambers, which typically operate in pairs.Over more than 90 years of technological history, the design of these reactors has undergone significant evolution. In practice, coking chambers can vary substantially in the following aspects: diameter: 5.0 m, 5.5 m, 7.0 m, 8.0 m, or more; feedstock inlet design: single-side lateral, double-side lateral, or central; support design: lug supports or support ring; welded joint design: horizontal or vertical; material composition: stainless steel or bimetal. The objective of the study was to model and analyze the operation of coking chambers with different feedstock inlet designs in order to develop the most efficient design in terms of reactor block reliability.
Key Findings
1
Coking chamber designs vary in diameter, inlet arrangement, supports, welded joints, and construction materials, affecting operational behavior.
2
The investigated reactors process heavy oil residues above 460 °C to produce light hydrocarbons and marketable petroleum coke.
3
The optimization objective is improving reactor-block reliability during delayed coking operations.
4
The study models and analyzes coking chambers with different feedstock inlet designs to identify the most efficient configuration.
