The article studies civic identity of university students in the new regions of the Russian Federation, using Kherson State Pedagogical University as an example. The relevance of studying this issue stems from the need to develop a positive and conscious civic identity among young people in the new regions and to foster traditional Russian spiritual and moral values. The study is based on empirical research. Its aim is to theoretically substantiate and identify the role of civic identity in the value system of young students (using the example of a university in a historically new region of the Russian Federation). The authors supposed that there are differences in the cognitive, emotional-evaluative, and practical components of civic identity and the characteristics of their interrelationships with personal values between students living in the new regions and those that have always been part of the Russian Federation. The article presents the results of an empirical study using the following methods: the MIRIPS questionnaire scale (N. M. Lebedeva, A. N. Tatarko), Thomas Kuhn and John McPartland’s “Who Am I” test, a questionnaire for studying the practical component of civic identity (Yu. V. Kaira, Yu. K. Kondratova), and Schwartz Value Survey (adapted by V. N. Karandyshev). The authors find differences in the degree of civil identity among groups of different regional affiliations across all the components of civil identity: cognitive, emotional-evaluative, and practical. It was found that students from the new region predominantly value “Kindness” (focusing on the wellbeing of close people), while among young people living in traditional regions, the value of “Universalism” prevails, which focuses on caring for all people and environment. The value of “Security” proved to be more significant for students who had experienced forced relocation. The prospects of the research include development of a program for formation of civic identity among students in new regions.
