Abstract (AI)
The article deals with the "medical" materials collected during the work of the "Eth-nographic Bureau of Prince V.N. Tenishev”, systematized by G.I. Popov - one of the twelve full-time employees of the bureau - and the draft program on medical ethnography, compiled by G.I. Popov. Gavriil Popov wrote a serious research work that raised important questions not only about the fundamental differences between folk healing and scientific medicine, but also about the picture of the world of the Russian peasantry. The study had enormous practical significance. Ethnography, understood in this way, had the potential to transform itself from a descriptive dis-cipline studying local folklore into an effective instrument of medical practice, and therefore empire management.
