Прозвішча Чыквін: да паходжання і прэзентацыі ў метрыкальных кнігах праваслаўнага прыхода ў Дубічах Царкоўных (1843‒1914)

The study presents proposals to explain the etymology of the surname Czykwin and the presence of this anthroponym in baptismal, marriage and death records in the Orthodox parish in Dubicze Cerkiewne in the years 1843–1914. The relevance of the discussed topic results from the lack of an answer to the question about the origin of this surname on the one hand, and on the other hand, it is to commemorate the professor, poet, prose writer and translator Jan Czykwin (1940–2022), born in Dubicze Cerkiewne, in connection with the 85th anniversary of his birth which happens to be in 2025. In the first part of the article, the main emphasis was placed on the etymological and semantic aspect. An attempt was made to derive the genesis of the surname Czykwin based on the findings of other researchers and on the basis of the available lexicographic studies. In the second part, a synchronic analysis of factual material excerpted from the parish registers was conducted, including the statistical and descriptive method. The number of bearers of the surname in the examined parish records was determined, selected demographic and sociolinguistic facts were presented, and attention was drawn to the peculiarities of the spelling of the forms of names and patronyms of bearers of the surname Czykwin.
