Abstract (AI)
I have cited both good and bad consequences that have been thought\nlikely from a policy change permitting voluntary active euthanasia, and have\ntried to evaluate their likelihood and relative importance. Nevertheless, as\nI noted earlier, reasonable disagreement remains both about the consequences\nof permitting euthanasia and about which of these consequences are more\nimportant. The depth and strength of public and professional debate about\nwhether, all things considered, permitting euthanasia would be desirable or\nundesirable reflects these disagreements. While my own view is that the\nbalance of considerations supports permitting the practice, my principal\npurpose here has been to clarify the main issues.
