The school and society

John Dewey's "The School and Society" argues that the traditional school system, characterized by passive, isolated learning focused heavily on symbolic studies, is fundamentally incompatible with the radical industrial and social revolutions of the modern age. Dewey calls for a "Copernican revolution" in education, asserting that the child must become the central sun around which all learning revolves. The school must be transformed into an "embryonic community life" where the child learns through active occupations (such as shop-work, cooking, and weaving). These practical activities serve as integral starting points for scientific insight and historical interpretation, providing a vital motive for otherwise abstract learning and instilling genuine discipline through cooperative constructive work.
