A review of rowing electrical installations of constant-constant, alternating-direct and alternating-alternating current used in the electric propulsion systems of ice-breaking class ships, as well as on naval ships of the United Kingdom Naval Forces and the United States Navy, is carried out. Based on the experience gained, it has been shown and justified the possibility and prospects of using switched reluctance motors with self-excitation as rowing motors for icebreakers of high power. For the designed options for low-speed two-pack switched reluctance motors of six-phase and ten-phase versions of 15 MW / 107 min-1, a comparative assessment of the structural and overall dimensions is given. Using computer simulation, it was shown that both engines provide the technical specifications required by the statement of work in the main modes: nominal, maximum speed and close to screw jamming with ice. The ten-phase switched reluctance motor, which is recommended for practical implementation, has an advantage in mass and torque pulsations.
