The article examines the activities of the publishing house "Academia" in the first half of the 1930s. It studies how in the prefaces to the Italian Renaissance's novels and treatises, written by Bolsheviks, the heads of the publishing house, and "old specialists", translators, historians, changed an ideological paradigm of the cultural project "a new soviet man": from the idea of overcoming history through the creation and mastering of a new artistic style, relying on the heritage of past centuries, to the affirmation of Soviet society in history through a system of artistic images, translated and adapted into the soviet culture.
1
Academia’s ideological project shifted from overcoming history through a new artistic style grounded in the past to affirming Soviet society within historical development.
2
Bolshevik editors and “old specialists”—translators and historians—jointly shaped the ideological interpretation of Renaissance texts for Soviet culture.
3
The study examines Academia’s publishing activities during the first half of the 1930s through prefaces to Italian Renaissance literary works.
4
Translated and adapted Renaissance artistic images became instruments for integrating earlier cultural heritage into the Soviet cultural framework and the project of creating a “new Soviet man”.
