Simultaneous presence of alkali—silica gel and ettringite in concrete has been reported by several authors. However, the proposed interpretations of this phenomenon, and its relationship to concrete durability, differ. Based on field experience and experimental research data, it is shown that the two phenomena are independent and can be experimentally distinguished.
1
Alkali–silica gel and ettringite can occur simultaneously in concrete.
2
Existing interpretations of their coexistence and implications for concrete durability differ among researchers.
3
Field observations and experimental data indicate that alkali–silica gel formation and ettringite formation are independent phenomena.
4
The two phenomena can be experimentally distinguished from one another.
