Wireless Sensor Networks is one of the newly emerging technologies to assist Internet of Things (IoT) related applications. In this paper, a wireless based vehicular sensor network system is proposed to address the commonly occurring problems such as vehicular thefts and unauthorized vehicular usage within a locality. The system architecture, software and hardware components used in the proposed system are discussed in this paper. An algorithm called River Formation Dynamics based Multi-hop Routing Protocol for Vehicles (RFDMRPV) is proposed. The deployment of the proposed system is demonstrated in real time environment using open-source platforms such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and XBee (using ZigBee protocol).
