Nanotechnology originates from a Greek word meaning ‘dwarf’. Nanometer is one billionth (10−9) of a metre, which is very tiny. It is only the length of a few hydrogen atoms or about one hundred thousandth of a human hair. Nanotechnology involves research and development at the atomic and macromolecular levels in the length scale of approximately 1 to 100 nm. The U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) definition decrees that anything smaller than 100 nanometers with novel properties is termed as Nanotechnology. Nanotechnology exploits the numerous progresses in chemistry, physics, materials science and bioscience to create novel materials that have unique properties due to their size, structure and architectures and are determined on the nanometer scale. Some of these materials have already found their way into industrial products.
