Successful treatment of membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis using prednisolone and chlorambucil in a young cat ( Felis catus )

Abstract A 1‐year‐old, female, neutered, domestic shorthair cat was referred for the investigation of hypoalbuminaemia. The protein:creatinine ratio (UPC) revealed severe proteinuria. At this point, the cat was receiving prednisolone initiated by the referring veterinarian. Given that the proteinuria did not resolve with initial treatment, a renal biopsy was performed, and the histological and ultrastructural study confirmed a severe membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis; therefore, a second immunosuppressant (chlorambucil) was added, and a gradual withdrawal of the glucocorticoid was initiated. This medical treatment, together with the use of an angiotensin receptor blocker, resulted in remission of signs 4 weeks after initiation of chlorambucil treatment. In addition, no side effects from the treatment were observed.
