Christian ethical reflections on artificial intelligence and its social implications

The fast spread of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized almost all spheres of human activity displacing, as well as, posing a basic ethical and theological challenge to the nature of humanity, responsibility, and moral agency. The present paper discusses the application of AI through the prism of Christian ethics and how religious concepts can be used to inform the process of making ethical judgments and adopting new technologies in a responsible manner. Based on theological insights into imago Dei, stewardship, and co-creation, the paper hypothesizes that AI can be understood as a companion, rather than a replace of human creativity and the process of making moral decisions. The paper presents a critique of the existing theological and ethical literature based on the qualitative theological review approach that seeks to establish the principles that can be used to guide the integration of AI into church ministry and Christian education and Observed in Christian learning institutions and places of worship in Indonesia. The results indicate that Christian ethics offers an important moral compass that ensures human dignity, justice, and dehumanization that may occur when technology is used to replace human agency instead of supporting it. The paper ends by suggesting that the Church should come up with frameworks of technomoral virtues to make sure that AI is used by humans based on the redemptive purposes of God. Moreover, the Indonesian setting underscores the socio-cultural, ecclesial, and educational realities that form the moral perception of AI and that theology should be context-sensitive and not blindly follow the technological standards used in other parts of the world.
