Abstract (AI)
Successful application of gravity drainage process, facilitated with steam injection, using horizontal wells in various field
tests, especially within Canada, indicates that high recovery factor and also economical steam to oil ratios are achievable.
Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage recovery scheme was theoretically developed, pilot tested and commercialized in Canada,
however, there are still several technical challenges to be solved in this process.
Key Findings
1
Gravity drainage with steam injection and horizontal wells can achieve high recovery factors in field tests, particularly in Canada.
2
SAGD was developed theoretically, pilot tested, and commercialized in Canada.
3
Several technical challenges in the SAGD process remain unresolved despite successful deployments.
4
Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) can produce economical steam-to-oil ratios under field conditions.
